Private Jet to Palm Beach

The main airport or a smaller field nearby? Choosing by where you stay

DJT, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale Executive and North County: matching the field to the house.

A Gulfstream jet on the ramp at sunset

President Donald J. Trump International Airport (DJT), the former Palm Beach International, is where most private flights to Palm Beach land, and for good reason. But Palm Beach County is long, and if your winter house is in Boca Raton, Jupiter or Fort Lauderdale, a smaller field nearby can save time on the road at each end. Here is how to choose between them, and when DJT is still the right answer even if another airport is closer.

Start with the address

The question is not which airport is best, but which is best for the house. A rough guide:

  • Palm Beach and West Palm Beach: DJT, a short drive from the island.
  • Jupiter, Tequesta and Palm Beach Gardens: North Palm Beach County’s general aviation airport (F45) for smaller aircraft, or DJT for larger ones.
  • Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Highland Beach: Boca Raton Airport (BCT).
  • Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach: Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE).
  • Miami: Opa-locka (OPF) or Miami Executive (TMB), depending on the neighborhood.

Then the aircraft

Smaller fields have shorter runways and fewer services, and that narrows the choice of aircraft. DJT suits every category. Boca Raton suits light and midsize jets, with larger aircraft subject to runway, weight and the operator. North County is best for smaller aircraft. Fort Lauderdale Executive handles a wide range of business jets. Your advisor confirms with the operator that the aircraft can use the field with your passengers and luggage.

Then the details

Beyond the runway, a few practical points decide it:

  • Services. Larger airports have more private terminals and more choice of fuel, catering and hangar space.
  • Customs. If you are arriving from abroad, the airport needs customs facilities for your flight. The operator confirms this when planning.
  • Hours. Smaller fields may have more limited hours for services. Late arrivals should be checked in advance.
  • Catering and extras. Larger airports have more choice of caterers and services; at a smaller field, order catering earlier.
  • Weather and alternates. On a stormy afternoon an operator may prefer the longer runways at DJT, whatever the plan.

Jupiter and the north

Jupiter, Tequesta and Palm Beach Gardens sit closer to North Palm Beach County’s general aviation airport than to DJT. For a turboprop or a small jet, that can mean landing almost on the doorstep. For larger aircraft, DJT remains the practical choice, with a longer drive up the coast. Your advisor checks runway, services and the operator’s preferences before recommending one or the other.

Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale

Boca Raton Airport serves Boca Raton and its neighbors, and it is a familiar choice for light and midsize jets heading to Boca, Delray Beach and Highland Beach. Fort Lauderdale Executive, a little further south, is a large and busy business aviation airport used by a wide range of aircraft. Both can save a long drive from DJT on a busy weekend, provided the aircraft and its load suit the runway.

Positioning can tip the balance

Price is rarely the deciding factor between fields, but it can be. If the aircraft that suits you is already parked at DJT, landing there may cost less than repositioning it to a smaller field. Conversely, an aircraft based at Fort Lauderdale Executive may make FXE the economical choice for a stay further south. Because every quote we send is all-in, the difference is visible before you decide.

When DJT wins anyway

Sometimes the nearest field is not the best one. A large group with a season’s luggage may need an aircraft that only DJT suits. A late arrival may be easier where services keep longer hours. On peak days, an aircraft may already be positioned at DJT, saving on repositioning. And for international arrivals, DJT is the straightforward choice. The drive is longer, but the trip is simpler.

When the smaller field wins

For a light or midsize jet heading to a house in Boca Raton or Jupiter, the smaller field can turn an hour in traffic into a few minutes, which is most of the point of flying privately. Weekend trips, in particular, feel very different when the car ride at each end is short.

It helps on the way home too. A Sunday departure from a field ten minutes from the house means a later lunch, an unhurried goodbye and less time on Interstate 95, which on a busy winter weekend is worth a good deal.

A quick way to decide

  1. Find the field nearest the house.
  2. Check that your aircraft suits its runway, with your passengers and luggage.
  3. Check services, hours and customs if they matter for the trip.
  4. Compare the all-in prices; positioning can differ between fields.
  5. If it is close, choose the field that makes the day simplest.
